Competition Bureau Cleans Up Montreal Sewer Conspiracy

The Competition Bureau’s clean-up of the Montreal sewer bid-rigging conspiracy continued with the announcement on June 22 that a second company, Colmatec Inc., and one of its executives, Rénald Drouin, pleaded guilty. They were charged on November 22, 2011, with 20 counts of bid-rigging, in relation to contracts worth nearly $1.4 million.

Colmatec agreed to pay a $50,000 fine. Drouin has agreed to a sentence of 100 hours of community service and two years probation.

Four companies and four individuals are still facing charges in relation to 37 calls for tender from different municipalities in the greater Montreal area in 2008 – 2009 worth a total of $3.3 million.

For more information, see the Bureau’s June 22 press release; the November 22, 2011, press release announcing charges and accompanying backgrounder.
